Beirout city center reconstruction – Liban, 1994-2004

Prize-winning project of the international competition for the landscaping of the entire historic city centre of Beirut, as part of the post-war reconstruction of the city centre.

This assignment included designing plans for all levels of intervention: from the general landscape to the refurbishment of public spaces including lighting, paving, designing squares, pedestrian streets, the entire tree- and flower-planting programme for the city, the creation of a nursery, cultural signage and the highlighting of excavations revealing 4,000 years of history.

The originality of the approach proposed by Interscène, along with archaeologists from UNESCO, was to integrate the archaeological excavations into the development of the city’s parks and gardens. Thus, the first squares open to the public incorporated various elements of the archaeological heritage brought to light during the excavation campaigns from 1994 to 1998, and this applied to the entire city centre.
